This is a textbook example of German Neoclassicism. It depicts a highly idealized, heavily muscled nude male figure designed to emphasize physical perfection, discipline, and heroic tension.
The title implies a person who weighs a situation before boldly executing a calculated risk, embodying the militaristic and ideological willpower prized by the regime.
Unlike many of Breker’s monumental works that were destroyed by Allied bombing or deliberate post-war denazification efforts, copies and models of Der Wäger survived. Today, a version of the bronze statue is housed at the Arno Breker Museum at Schloss Nörvenich in Germany.
