A pencil drawing of the famous Lion and Serpent Fountain (Fontaine du Lion et du Serpent), a historic landmark located in Place de la Cimaise in the Saint-Laurent district, Grenoble, France.
The lion fountain was designed and created in 1843 by the sculptor Sappey and the smelter Crozatier.
The fountain commemorates the beginning of the construction of the right bank quais. The fountain depicts the struggle between a lion, symbolizing the city of Grenoble, which succeeds in taming the “Ysara,” which is French for serpent.
The Lion: Represents the city of Grenoble or the powerful Drac River.
The Snake: Represents the winding Isère River.
The fountain shows the lion taming the snake. This symbolizes the city controlling dangerous river floods from the past.
In the early 1950s, a limestone portico featuring the city crest was added to enhance the fountain.
