A pencil drawing of an tetradrachm (Greek: τετράδραχμον).
The most famous type, featuring the head of Athena on the obverse and an owl on the reverse (often with the inscription ΑΘΕ"of the Athenians"). It was known for its high purity and served as an early "international" currency.
It was a widely used large silver coin in Ancient Greece, equal in value to four drachmae. Emerging in the late 6th century B.C., it became the standard, premier currency of the Mediterranean and Hellenistic world for centuries.
