A pencil drawing of the Eagles mosaic, a detail of a mosaic panel from the Mosaic Hall in the New Reich Chancellery depicting 2 eagles, standing adjacent to each other, grasping a burning torch, garlanded with leaves.
Designed by Hermann Kaspar.
Speer commissioned him to design mosaics, frescoes, floors, friezes and wood inlays for the New Reich Chancellery.
After the war, Kaspar received numerous state commissions, including the national coat of arms tapestry in the Senate Hall of the Bavarian state parliament. Kaspar finished work he had started under the Reich. He began his monumental wall mosaic for the Congress Hall of Munich’s German Museum in 1935, finally completing it in 1955.
The Mosaic Hall - which was entirely clad in red marble panels - was a 15.3 meter floor height, 22 meter wide, 36.4 meter long Hall.
An excerpt from the “Die Neues Reichskanzlei” book :
“The large mosaic surfaces by Hermann Kaspar, strictly divided by barely protruding polished marble bands, cover the high walls, marble slabs with mosaic stripes cover the floor. A wide, richly structured cornice stands out brightly against the red of the walls and slightly overlooks the light-transmitting glass ceiling.”
