A pencil drawing of the Justice statue at the Shelby County Chancery Court in Memphis, Tennessee. Made in 1910 by the prominent artist, J. William Rhyne, this is one of the 6 massive statues (Wisdom, Justice, Liberty, Peace, Prosperity, and Authority ) each carved from a single block of limestone, guarding the entrances to the courthouse for more than a century.
Justice is Themis (Ancient Greek: Θέμις) an ancient Greek Titaness. She is described as "[the Lady] of good counsel", and is the personification of divine order, fairness, law, natural law, and custom. Her symbols are the Scales of Justice, tools used to remain balanced and pragmatic.
Since the 16th century, Lady Justice has often been depicted wearing a blindfold. The blindfold represents impartiality, the ideal that justice should be applied without regard to wealth, power, or other status.
