A pencil drawing of the Krause Tomb - Greek warrior statue, made by Roland Engelhard, 1914, in the Ohlsdorf Cemetery, Hamburg.
The Krause tomb is dedicated to Lieutenant Julius Krause, who died at the age of 21.
It depicts a kneeling, wounded warrior based on the ancient model of the dying Achilles.
He wears a helmet, round shield and short sword, a cloak over his left shoulder, but is otherwise undressed. The focus here is not on the naturalistic impression, but rather on the strong symbolism, which is presented in impressive aesthetics. The bent body and the round shield form an optical unit, whereby the round shape is picked up and continued by the helmet.
The inscription “PRO PATRIA” is inscribed on the shield, which means “for one’s country”.
This derives from the “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori” line from the Odes (III.2.13) by the Roman lyric poet Horace.
