A pencil drawing of “Löwenkämpfer” (The Lion Fighter) an 1858 bronze equestrian statue by Albert Wolff, installed outside the Altes Museum in Berlin, Germany.
An 1892 copy stands in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The statue, shows a nude lance-wielding man on horseback about to kill a lion with his spear.
The rearing horse is in fear and pain whilst a roaring lion lying just beneath the horse reaches up and rakes its claws across the front proper right flank of the horse.
The imagery is violent and fantastical.
