A pencil drawing of the marble statue of the portrait of Marcus Aurelius, Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Antonine period.
The smooth, softly modeled carving of the flesh contrasts markedly with the mass of thick, curling hair. The drooping eyelids and detached gaze suggest his contemplative nature.
Marcus’ Meditations (Greek : Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν) is a series of personal writings, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement.
