A pencil drawing of The Memorial to the fallen German soldiers in Sandkamp of World War I near Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. The sculptor is unidentified.
The absolute majority of the German war memorials originally
commemorated soldiers fallen during the First World War. Most of them
were extended later to show the names of locals who died at the front
lines of World War Il in addition.
The youthful warrior is depicted in an upright pose kneeling on one knee, wearing a Stahlhelm ('steel helmet'), grips a sword in his right hand and in the other he a wreath of oak leaves. Following the ideal figure of ancient models, the naked, athletic body of the warrior is muscularly modeled.
