A pencil drawing of Arno Breker’s The Avenger / Der Rächer statue.
The relief depicts a heroic warrior with a drawn sword in combat with serpents. It is a classical symbol, which depicts the fight against evil. It undoubtedly attracts its origin from Ancient Greece. Although the head bears the characteristic design of Breker, the body of the guard is reminiscent of many statues of classical or late antiquity.
This was one of the monumental reliefs (5m high) to decorate the Grosser Bogen, a monumental arch to be built in the center of Germania, to which Berlin was to be transformed after the war was won (about 1950). Designed by state architect Albert Speer, was intended to be a war monument dedicated to all fallen soldiers of the Reich.
