A pencil drawing of The Fallen Spartan warrior / Hero statue, in the central square of Sparta, Laconia.
Created by sculptor Kostas Ananidas, erected in 2007.
Depicts a life-size hoplite of the Spartan army who, caught in battle, fallen, leans on his shield which bears the letter Λ - Λακεδαιμόνιοι (English : L / Lacedaemonians), while in his right hand he holds his sword.
The portrayal of the bronze statue is abstract and, apart from the weapons, the helmet and some elements of the clothing are faintly presented.
The sculpture is placed on a marble pedestal with an inscription of Tyrtaeus :
“What honor for a man to fall and die fighting in the fire for his homeland with his sword in his right hand.”
