A pencil drawing of Arno Breker’s relief The Guard / Der Wächter.
This was one of the monumental reliefs (5m high) to decorate the Grosser Bogen. The relief depicts a heroic warrior with a drawn sword, iconographically similar to the monumental figure of "Bereitschaft" of 1939. The thorough and careful, Doric, depiction of the guard-warrior, undoubtedly attracts its origin from Ancient Greece. Hence the archaic mantle, the sword on the right side of the waist, and the oval shield. Although the head bears the characteristic design of Breker, the body of the guard is reminiscent of many statues of classical or late antiquity.
